The Epstein-Barr virus usually causes mononucleosis. Because this virus spreads through saliva, it is believed that kissing is one of the main causes that lead to mononucleosis. Therefore, it is also known as kissing disease. When a person suffers from mononucleosis, they will experience weakness for several weeks. The symptoms are relatively mild in children, while some adults are immune to the virus. However, the following symptoms are likely to usually evolve after four to six weeks of illness:

  • Swelling of the lymph nodes.

  • Headache.
  • Severe throat pain
  • Skin rash.

What causes mononucleosis?

The only factor that causes mononucleosis is the Epstein-Barr virus. This virus can spread through saliva, tears, and mucus from the throat and nose. In most cases, adults develop antibodies that give the body immunity against the Epstein-Barr virus.

What are the possible complications of mononucleosis?

Although mononucleosis heals on its own, hepatitis and jaundice are two common complications that can arise. The enlarged spleen is another dangerous complication because, if the spleen cracks, severe pain on the left side of the upper abdomen.

This may require surgery. Other uncommon complications include:

  • Low amount of platelets.
  • Inflammation of the heart muscle.
  • Swelling of the tonsils that causes breathing difficulties.
  • Complications of the nervous system including encephalitis.
  • Serious illnesses occur if a person has a weak immune system.
  • Treatment of secondary infections.
  • Although some medications are beneficial for patients with mononucleosis, others can be harmful. An example could be antibiotics of the penicillin type that may well cause a rash.

However, medications are not always necessary.
