Not the Same as Wellbeing Training

This is not to be confused with wellbeing training that is held within workplaces for staff to manage their own stress and improve their overall wellbeing within work. This type of training is focused on frontline staff to recognise a crisis and de-escalate in real life situations and to give a calm and appropriate first response to a person in acute mental health distress.

What the Training Actually Covers

You will learn how to identify key presentations and how to respond to them in a calm, first contact manner. This is very practical knowledge and understanding how someone’s behaviour could indicate that they are experiencing a mental health crisis (as opposed to just being difficult) is key to how you respond to them.

Listening and Language Under Pressure

Active listening on a busy housing corridor or on the street is different from a quiet office. Trainees learn how to use open and non-threatening language; how to lower their own tone and speaking pace; and how to give a person space in order to help them feel safer without losing control of the situation.

Knowing When to Refer or Escalate

The training will look at the situations where you would need to refer on to another service and how you would hand over to emergency services or mental health teams in a safe manner.
