How does depression affect us

There are many theories as to how depression works and in some cases this can be as a result of a chemical imbalance in our brains as well as stress causing alterations to how our brain responds to this issue. Stress is useful in small amounts but large amounts and prolonged periods of high stress can cause issues with both our physical and our mental health. It is thought that the changes that occur in the way the brain responds to stress takes place in a number of areas of the brain such as the pituitary gland, the adrenal gland and the hypothalamus. In essence when we experience stress our brain then releases chemicals which can create symptoms of depression.

When depression starts to affect an individual it can cause lots of physical symptoms as well as affecting their ability to be able to concentrate and feel motivated in their job. This is why it is incredibly important for employers to be aware of how depression can impact individuals that may work in their company. This allows them to identify ways in which the business can support this individual. This could be through workplace adjustments or providing employee programs that give them access to counsellors and other mental health professionals.
